November Movie Night "A Man Called Otto"

  • Common Root Mutual Aid Center 211 N 14th St, #323 Lincoln, NE 68503 (map)

CW: Rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving suicide attempts, and language.

A Man Called Otto is a story about an elderly man that feels like he has lost everything that made life worth living. Through a series of events and happenstance, especially interactions with some new neighbors, he discovers new reasons to go on with life.

But he's going to grumble about it every step of the way. He considers most people around him to be 'idiots', but he eventually comes around. This story started out as a Swedish novel, which was made into a Swedish movie, both called A Man Called Ove. This is the American remake. You will believe Tom Hanks is a grumpy old man. <spoiler in one scene, he makes a clown cry>

Superior performances, especially by Hanks and costar Mariana Treviño, but the whole ensemble does an excellent job. Director Marc Forster has not really been on my radar, though it seems i have seen two of his previous efforts and will be checking out some of the others. As usual, Popcorn will be provided.
