“The public library is the last bastion of democracy that we have in this country!”
This 2018 film Is written and directed by Emilio Estevez who also returns on screen for the first time since 2010. Inspired by a real period of bitter cold in Cincinnati, the film explores a sit-in by a large number of homeless people at the Downtown branch of the city Library. It also explores the issues of mental health, political expediency and the fine line between personal rights and maintaining a safe and healthy public space for all patrons. Levels of commitment to activism are also explored. The use of social media to make up for the limitations of mass media is a factor, as is the idea that every police officer is not just a police officer, but a person with their own problems. Not an easy film to watch, but given everything that goes before, ends the only way it can.
As always, free popcorn will be provided, also discussion afterwards for anyone that would like to stay to share. Bring any drinks and/or snacks you’d like to enjoy and maybe share.
